Photography classes

Funky Monkey Photography is offering photography classes including camera skills and hands-on practice. Classes are generally offered on Saturday afternoons or weekday evenings and take place in our studio located at 5440 Willow Rd, Suite 116, Waunakee, WI 53597. Curriculum is meant for adult participants (although exceptions can be made for mature older children who are strongly interested in learning photography). Our classes are designed for beginners and intermediate level. Classes are NOT meant for advanced and professional photographers.  The dates listed above are subject to a limited space availability. Class size is limited to 12 participants.

Classes are taught by Justyna Nielsen, photographer and owner of Funky Monkey Photography. Since 2006, Justyna has specialized in photographing children and families in Madison, Wisconsin. Justyna taught several classes to parents and photography enthusiasts in 2010 with great success and requests for additional class offerings. We’re excited to offer a new line line up of photography classes in 2012.  Since Justyna’s main focus is on photographing children and families, the classes also center around learning how to photograph families.

What’s covered

The following topics will be covered in each of the classes:

  1. Camera basic skills - geared toward beginners, new owners of a DSLR cameras, or anyone using using their camera in “Auto” mode only.
Topics include: basic photography terms and usage such as aperture, shutter speed, ISO. Getting to know your camera functions and settings. Changing from Auto to Aperture Priority or Manual Mode. Bring your camera to class! While this class is mainly tailored to DSLR camera owners, topics covered can be applicable to any camera with advance shooting modes (more than juts “Auto”).
  2. Camera skills to the next level -  take your camera knowledge to the next level once you master your basics. This part includes a short practice shooting in Manual mode with the user controlling all settings. Learn how to harness the power of your camera to take the kind of photographs you wish you could take. If you’ve had your camera for a while, if you know about aperture and shutter speed, then this is the right class for you.
  3. How to photograph your family naturally – includes hands on practice photographing a child using natural light. Instead of focusing on technical aspects of a camera, we will focus on how to create esthetically pleasing photographs without blur and color casts, cropped off heads and red eyes. You’ll learn new ideas on how to interact with children, where to find the best spots to photograph your family and more. Includes tips on processing and printing your photographs. Covered topics are uploading your digital images, digital file types, what programs to use to edit or process photos, how to fix some common problems such as color or exposure issues, where consumers can print for best results. **** We recommend taking one (or both) of out Camera Skills classes before taking this class, or an equivalent knowledge and skills in using a DSLR camera in a manual mode.

What’s NOT covered

  • Photographing using studio lights, strobes or flash.
  • Advanced or professional level photography skills.
  • Business of photography, marketing, how to start your own business, etc.
  • At this time we are not offering any digital editing information, although we may cover that in the future if interest is strong.

Included

  • Each participant will receive a packet of information to follow along during class. Participants will receive additional challenges and “homework” to use the newly learned skills.

FAQ

  • Do I need a fancy camera to attend your classes?
No. Our Camera Basic Skills and Next Level Skills geared toward a DSLR owners. However, attendees with point-and-shoot cameras will be able to relate to the info in the Camera Skills – Beginner Level as well as How to photograph your family.  We do recommend a camera with some advanced modes besides just “AUTO” to take advantage of our curriculum.
  • I’m about to buy a new camera, which one should I buy?
Which camera you buy should depend on your needs for photographing. For quality photography we recommend a DSLR camera. However, for traveling and for portability, there are some point and shoot cameras with advanced features that may work for you. If you are not sure what camera to buy, we recommend going to a local camera store and speak to a sales person first, then research consumer guides and user opinions online. During our classes, we do provide limited information about what lenses to consider for desired effects.
  • Should I bring my camera to class?
Yes! You should definitely bring your camera to get the most out of your class, and any lenses you won.
  • What if I need to reschedule?
If you need to reschedule, please contact us at least 48 in advance to give another participant a chance to fill your spot, the sooner the better. If such advance notice is provided, we can transfer your voucher to another available date, subject to our schedule availability and openings. If a shorter than 24 hour or no notice is provided, voucher will be considered used since we won’t be able to fill your spot in the class.  You can cancel your class here and re-register here.
  • Should I take the beginner or intermediate class?
If you just got your camera recently andor are still shooting in “Auto” mode, please consider the beginner class. We will learn how to go from Auto mode to Aperture priority.
If you’ve had your camera for a while and/or have prior photography knowledge and/or are shooting in any other mode than “Auto” (such as Manual, Aperture Priority, Shutter Speed Priority), then sign up for the intermediate class. We will learn how to use your Manual mode efficiently.
