Funky meaning unconventional, non-traditional, unique. That’s our style. Monkey because I think it describes a kid in motion, having fun, monkeying round. Photography with a tale is how we hope you see our work. Visual stories.
About the photographer
Hi, I’m Justyna Nielsen, the photographer and owner of Funky Monkey Photography with a tale. Photography is not only my business, but also my passion. I chose to specialize in creating portraits of children and families because that’s whose stories I love to capture. I’m captivated by the little ones the most, from tiny days old newborns, chubby babies, toddling tots, children of all ages.
Our lives have been blessed with a little girl born in 2006, our little miracle baby. She’s now a spunky 4+ year old pre-schooler and my muse. Our family has lived in the Madison area for over 10 years. My husband, Dustin, is a Wisconsin native while I moved here from Poland (Europe) in high school.
My photo-passion was sparked by my dad’s love of film photography. I studied film photography and business, earning my BBA degree from Univesity of Wisconsin-Whitewater.
Funky Monkey Photography was started in 2006 when my love of children and digital photography fused. I continued mastering my photography skills through WPPI and PPA classes, and private workshops with several world-renowned photographers.
I hope to record your story, so you may share it with your children, and your children’s children. Please feel free to contact me.
About Funky Monkey Photography
Capturing childhood moments into forever memories for their parents. Funky Monkey Photography specializes in children and family portraits. We offer maternity, newborn, babies, children, and family portrait sessions in our Madison studio or on-location within Madison, Wisconsin, and surrounding areas Middleton, Fitchburg, Verona, McFarland, Monona, Waunakee, Sun Prairie, DeForest, Stoughton, etc.
Equipment
Sometimes I get asked what kind of camera or equipment I use. I believe that an artist’s work is the result of their creativity, eye and heart. Not their tools. My camera and lens are just an extension of my “creative eye.” Having said that, I like nice tools. We carry professional grade quality equipment and keep up with the latest technology in the digital portrait photography field and ensure to have back up of all equipment. Currently, in my camera bag are (I also like nice camera bags as you may notice when you meet me): Nikon D700 with a little army of portrait lenses including Nikon 24-70mm 2.8, 50mm 1.4, 85 1.4, and more. While we specialize in natural light portraiture, we also have extensive lighting equipment including studio and portable lights.

Located in the beautiful isthmus near the heart of the city. With a convenient distance from all sides of Madison, Middleton, and around, you’ll find us at 203 S Paterson St in Madison. Our studio is filled with display ideas for your portraits. Including Canvas Wraps, extensive frame selection, Story Book samples, and more.
